Did Najib buy four dresses a day for Rosmah? MP files report

An opposition lawmaker has filed a police report against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak over the allegation that he transferred a total of US$14 million between 2011 and 2014 to local fashion house Jakel Trading.
Lim Lip Eng's report with the Dang Wangi police headquarters today is based on the alleged breakdown of expenses published by the Wall Street Journal last week.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, the DAP Segambut MP revealed that he did some number crunching on the matter.
"We have checked, some dresses costs RM10,000 each at Jakel.
"So Did Najib buy 5,500 dresses from Jakel for (his wife) Rosmah (Mansor) in four years? One year equals 365 days, which in turn equals to 1,375 dresses. That is about four dresses a day.
"If the WSJ report is true, this is worse than Imelda Marcos," he said.
Imelda is the widow of former Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos, who owns more than a thousand pair of expensive shoes.
Meanwhile, the DAP MP asked where the money had come from since the prime minister could not afford such extravagant expenditure with his salary.
In his police report, Lim urged for investigations into the US$14 million with regard to elements of corruption, tax evasion and money laundering.
According to WSJ, Najib spent a total of US$15 million on holidays, shopping and jewellery. The spending was done at stores in the United States, Malaysia, Italy and elsewhere.
The prime minister has repeatedly denied using public funds for personal gain and blamed such allegations on those conspiring to topple him from power.
Meanwhile, the government has also accused WSJ of being part of this campaign against the prime minister.
Prior to the WSJ report, the Australia Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) published a letter from Saudi prince Saud Abdulaziz Majid pledging US$375 million to Najib.
Impressed by the prime minister's governance based on Islamic principles, the prince said Najib could do as he pleased with the gift.
In January, attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali had cleared Najib of any wrongdoing withe regard to the RM2.6 billion found in his personal account, which was described as a political donation from the Middle East, and the RM42 million from SRC International.
